Guided bone regeneration (GBR) – correlating the appropriate choice of biomaterial with specific clinical scenarios

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) was developed in the late 80’ based on the guided tissue regeneration. Quickly it become the most popular technique for bone regeneration due to its versatility: the same technique can be used to treat small periimplant defects like dehiscence or fenestrations, or large horizontal defects where simultaneous implant placement is not possible and a staged approach is mandatory. The popularity of the GBR technique lead to the development of different biomaterials and membranes. Today, the GBR technique is the mostly documented technique in the literature. Still, there is a lot of confusion and uncertainty among practitioners regarding the choice of biomaterial suitable for different clinical scenarios.
