Lecture

Patients with peri-implant diseases – how to actually treat them?

European and national guidelines for the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implant disease.

The statistics are unbeatable – every second patient with a dental implant will develop peri-implant mucositis, and every fourth peri-implantitis. In addition, the treatment is more complex and the outcomes more unpredictable compared to gingivitis and periodontitis.

The European Federation for Periodontology made great step forward in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases back in 2017 with the Classification, and then in 2023 with Clinical Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases.

The aim of the lecture is to present preventive and therapeutic clinical procedures based on currently available scientific evidence that should be implemented during the planning and placement of dental implants, as well as in the long-term follow-up of patients whose teeth have been replaced with dental implants.

The Croatian Periodontal Society, as the leading periodontal professional society in Croatia and a national member of the European Federation for Periodontology, translated in Croatian the Guidelines for the treatment of periodontitis from stages I to IV and the Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases, thereby starting the process of their implementation. Dissemination of the Guidelines in printed form is expected by the end of 2024.
